5 Important Health Benefits of Chia Seeds
Chi-chi-chi-chia! These seeds, which used to grow the green fur on the novelty Chia Pets are actually packed full of nutrition. Like other super seeds such as flax and hemp seeds, chia seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and protein. The seeds have a delicate nutty taste that blends well with pretty much any meal or snack you choose.
If you combine chia seeds with water, the seeds form a gel. When you eat the seeds on their own, this reaction takes place in your stomach. The gel slows digestion, so you feel full for longer. It also keeps your blood sugar levels from spiking.
You can find chia seeds at health food stores and some well-stocked grocery stores, depending on where you live. If you cannot find the seeds locally, they are sold on many online stores. The seeds are typically sold whole, though you can grind them and get the same health benefits. Chia seeds have a long shelf life, in part because they are so high in antioxidants. The antioxidants keep the seeds from going bad.
Benefits of Eating Chia Seeds:  1. Omega-3 fatty acids 2. Keeps blood sugar balanced 3. High in minerals 4. Helps with weight loss 5. Full of antioxidants  Read More
Dr. Jay’s Note:  We’ve been eating chia seeds in the Weber household for a few years now. Powerful & easy addition to any smoothie. My Wonder Woman (the Mrs.) likes to add them to her cold jasmine green tea for a bubble tea or boba effect.

Chocolate ‘may help keep people slim’
People who eat chocolate regularly tend to be thinner, new research suggests.
The findings come from a study of nearly 1,000 US people that looked at diet, calorie intake and body mass index (BMI) - a measure of obesity.
It found those who ate chocolate a few times a week were, on average, slimmer than those who ate it occasionally.
Even though chocolate is loaded with calories, it contains ingredients that may favour weight loss rather than fat synthesis, scientists believe. Read More
Dr. Jay’s Note:  Dark chocolate is one of my favorite guilt-free treats. The above study is just the latest in a growing amount of evidence that shows the benefits of dark chocolate consumption.

The French Paradox
How do the French do it? They eat some of the richest, fat-laden foods in the world, yet they are some of the slimmest people in the world. In fact, only 7% of their population is considered obese!
Red wine consumption is one explanation for this phenomenon. You know the French and their wines! One of the active ingredients in red wine is resveratrol, a grape compound from the skins of red grapes that reportedly fights cancer, heart disease and degenerative nerve disease. This fact alone led to an increase in red wine consumption worldwide.
One other thing about the French - they start out the day eating most of their daily food consumption, and then their meals get smaller as their day goes on.
Portion control seems to be another one of the main explanations for the paradox. Most portions are 25% smaller than what we’re accustomed. Read More

Exercise Is Good for Your Waistline — But It’s a Writing Exercise
ScienceDaily (Jan. 4, 2012) — Is losing weight as simple as doing a 15-minute writing exercise? In a new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, women who wrote about their most important values, like close relationships, music, or religion, lost more weight over the next few months than women who did not have that experience.
“We have this need to feel self-integrity,” says Christine Logel of Renison University College at the University of Waterloo, who cowrote the new study with Geoffrey L. Cohen of Stanford University. When something threatens your sense that you’re a good person, like failing a test or having a fight with a friend, “We can buffer that self-integrity by reminding ourselves how much we love our children, for example,” she says.
For this study, the researchers recruited 45 female undergraduates who had a body mass index of 23 or higher. A body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal weight; 58% of the women were overweight or obese. Each woman was weighed, and was then given a list of important values, like creativity, politics, music, and relationships with friends and family members. Each woman ranked the values in order of how important they were to her. Then half the women were told to write for 15 minutes about the value that was most important to her. The other half, a control group, were told to write about why a value far down on their list might be important to someone else.
The women came back between one and four months later to be weighed again. Women who had written about an important value lost an average of 3.41 pounds, while women in the control group gained an average of 2.76 pounds, a pattern of weight gain that is typical for undergraduates.  Read More
