Tension Headaches -
Here are some basic facts about tension (stress) headaches. They usually affect women more often than men. Generally, you feel them coming on slowly, usually in the middle of the day. You can have daily headaches or they can occur episodically. They are the most common type of headache, affecting from 30% - 80% of all adults.

We have found that the main cause of tension headaches can be traced to excess stress within the spinal cord. This spinal cord tension is often triggered by stress, fatigue, depression, certain activities in which you hold your head in the same position for a long time (such as working on a computer), anxiety, PMS or hormonal changes, repressed anger, sleeping in an abnormal position and teeth grinding.

Many who experience tension headaches rely on non-prescription medications to reduce the pain. Ironically, overuse of these drugs can actually trigger subsequent episodes of tension headaches!
Non-medical approaches may actually prove more beneficial.  Read More

The Facts About Fevers
Anything that suggest the slightest thing is wrong with a child will cause concern in a parent. A fever, for example, is one of the primary reasons parents will call their child’s pediatrician.

Yet the truth is, what many of us have been told is a “low-grade fever” is a natural body temperature for some children. Much of what parents have believed for years is just not true.
Fever 101: What Parents Need to Know
Simply put, our body’s first line of defense when invaded by any microbe, virus or bacteria are cells called microphages; a strong, healthy immune system may be able to eliminate the problem with this first step alone. If these fail to contain the microbe/”bug,” then the body creates other pryogens and proteins to try to assist. Once these have been created, the hypothalamus in the brain recognizes there is an invader and raises the body temperature to assist in killing it off.
This elevated temperature will generally be just a couple of degrees, but the hypothalamus determines, based on the number of pryogens and proteins, what will be necessary to eliminate the microbe/bug. If the hypothalamus creates additional biochemicals to try to protect the body, then the temperature rises accordingly.1
Defining a Fever
For all children above the age of 3 months, a fever is actually a good thing.2-3 It’s a sign that their immune system is functioning properly. Although many parents will panic when their child has a temperature above 98.6° F (37° C), and this is understandable since many health care providers have called this a “low-grade fever,” the reality is that children’s temperature may naturally run a little higher than what many consider the norm.
A true low-grade fever is anything between 100° F and 102.2° F (37.8° C and 39° C). This level of fever is beneficial; with most microbes/”bugs” that a child will be exposed to, this fever will assist the body in repelling the invader.2-3
A moderate-grade fever is typically between 102.2° F and 104.5° F (39° C and 40° C). This temperature is still considered beneficial; if a child’s body has reached this temperature, it’s what’s needed to kill whatever bacteria or virus their body is attempting to fight.2-3
A high fever is a fever greater than 104.5° F (40° C). This fever may cause the child some discomfort and result in a bit of crankiness. Generally indicative of a bacterial infection, this fever means that the body is fighting something a little more serious than the common cold. While it will not cause brain damage or any other harm to a child, it is wise to seek assistance from their medical provider.2-3
A serious fever is one that is at or above 108° F (42° C); this fever can be harmful.2-3
Can a Fever Be Dangerous?
Fevers that are caused by the body’s immune system are not dangerous, and the hypothalamus will control the body temperature and not allow it to get so high as to cause harm. While it can be frightening to have a child running a moderate to high fever, it is simply their body doing what it was designed to do.
The only body temperature that can actually cause brain damage, despite what many parents believe, is 108° F (42° C), and this body temperature cannot typically be achieved on its own, but requires extreme external environmental temperatures – for instance, if a child is left in a closed car in hot weather.  Read More
Dr. Jay’s Note:  In my opinion, one of the biggest mistakes parents make is to attempt to reduce a fever in their child. Fevers are nature’s way of self-healing & should be embraced not feared. Artificially reducing a fever typically prolongs illness & increases the chances of relapse.

“When You’re Feeling Dim…”
Ever have one of those days where you just don’t feel as bright as you should? Your diet’s good, you’re getting enough exercise but for some reason you still feel drained and unproductive. Maybe it’s time for a trip to the Chiropractor…
Think of your Nerve System as electrical wires and your body a 100 watt light bulb connected to it. When the wires are clear and electricity flows freely, your bulb glows to 100 watts. But if power is restricted in the wires, your bulb dims. Chiropractors call it being Subluxated or in a ‘state of less light/less energy.’ And the only thing that can ‘light you up’ again is a specific, loving Chiropractic Adjustment.
Eating properly and getting enough exercise is important, but you’ll never shine to your full potential if you’re Subluxated…and you can’t afford that. The world needs you beaming at 100 watts. So don’t wait until your light’s completely out. Get adjusted and shine bright with regular Chiropractic care!  (via the weeklysticky.com)

Military Pokes Holes In Acupuncture Skeptics’ Theory
‘Let’s Give It A Shot’
Army doctors have been told by the top brass to rethink their “pill for every ill” approach to treating pain. For the 47,000 troops who’ve been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, some of the new options include less tried and true methods, like massage and chiropractic treatments. The military hopes to win over skeptics, many of them in uniform.
Wasserman is the top doctor for the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Campbell, Ky. To her own surprise, she’s also now the unit’s physician trained to do acupuncture.
“I actually had a demonstration of acupuncture on me, and I’m not a spring chicken,” she says, “and it didn’t make me 16 again, but it certainly did make me feel better than I had, so I figured, hey … let’s give it a shot with our soldiers here.”
In recent years, military doctors have turned to acupuncture in special pain clinics and for troops in battle zones. Last year, the Army surgeon general began making the alternative treatments more widely available.
Steering Away From Painkillers
Remalia says his headaches have disappeared, and he’s relying less on his cabinet full of pain medication. To Col. Kevin Galloway, that’s mission accomplished. He’s in charge of carrying out recommendations from the Army’s Pain Management Task Force, which focused heavily on unconventional therapies.
“You can throw fairly cheap pharmaceuticals at the problem now and push the problem to someone else later if you’re not really working on what the genesis of the pain is,” he says.
Galloway says if soldiers get hooked on high-powered painkillers, the Department of Veterans Affairs may be dealing with the side effects for decades to come. Already, at least 40 percent of veterans entering the VA system are coping with pain.  Read More
Dr. Jay’s Note:  If you were to accidentally step on a dog’s tail - Where would the noise come out? The yelping sounds from the dog’s mouth are symptoms of something greater going on & simply treating these symptoms by trying to eliminate the dog’s ability to vocalize a health issue with drugs or surgery is equivalent to the medical approach to health. True holistic health practitioners look beyond obvious signs & symptoms to the actual origins of dis-ease & work to re-establish your natural state of ease. In other words, we take our foot off of the dog’s tail.

Combating Depression With Meditation, Diet

In his book Spontaneous Happiness, Dr. Andrew Weil writes of an ‘integrative’ approach to mental health, warding off mild and moderate depression with an anti-inflammatory diet, exercise and activities such as yoga and meditation, rather than antidepressants.  Read More or Listen to Story Here

Dr. Jay’s Note:  No matter your current condition, you almost always have multiple natural options to improve your life. A holistic approach, one that encompasses the body, mind & spirit, is what I recommend to create long-lasting positive changes.

Chiropractic Fires Up Your LIFE!
A chain reaction occurs when a small event ignites a reaction nearby, setting off another reaction, then another, until it produces an ultimate result. Getting your health back with Chiropractic care happens in a similar way.
Chiropractors start the process with a small event called an Adjustment. Spinal adjustments restore a state of Ease in your nerve system which ignites Healing. Over Time your body’s internal Functions light up and you experience Benefits like stronger immunity, deeper sleep, greater physical performance and a confident sense of well being. The ultimate thing that lights up is your LIFE.
The goal of Chiropractic is to ignite Life within you so you can regain your health, fulfill your purpose and bring more joy to those around you. Staying ‘lit up’ with regular Chiropractic care is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and those you love the most. (via theweeklysticky.com)
Dr. Jay’s Note:  In my opinion, this is what chiropractic & holistic healing is really about. Unfortunately, many practitioners have been swayed by societies focus on quick-fix pain & symptom relief & have forgotten about the bigger picture that true wellness presents.
If you want to get the most out of your life, I recommend that you find a holistic chiropractor that follows the above philosophy.

For Kids With ADHD, Regular ‘Green Time’ Is Linked to Milder Symptoms
A study of more than 400 children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has found a link between the children’s routine play settings and the severity of their symptoms, researchers report. Those who regularly play in outdoor settings with lots of green (grass and trees, for example) have milder ADHD symptoms than those who play indoors or in built outdoor environments, the researchers found. The association holds even when the researchers controlled for income and other variables.
The study appears in the journal Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 9.5 percent of children aged 4-17 had been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2007. Symptoms include severe difficulty concentrating, hyperactivity and poor impulse control.  Read More
