The Daily Bike
Surely this is the cycling quote of the month: “I haven’t cycled on a track for 80 years,” said Frenchman Robert Marchand. “You have to get used to the fixed gear! I prefer cycling outside but that is impossible at the moment [due to snow]. I don’t want to catch the flu. So I am short on training.”
You’re forgiven, dude.
If you’re lucky enough to live 100 years, a bicycle probably looks like a hip fracture waiting to happen, but Marchand, the stud, celebrated his centenary by breaking the one-hour distance record for his age group in a velodrome at the World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland. He rode 24.251 kilometers without getting his heart rate above 110. “I could keep going for another hour,” Marchand said. “I’ve been told not to raise my pulse too high so I’m not even tired.”
Marchand’s last competition was 10 years ago, at age 90. He rode (and finished) the 600km Bordeaux-Parise race. But then he decided to notch it back.  Read More

What Causes Exercise Induced Muscle Cramps?
Many endurance athletes and daily exercisers alike suffer the pain of muscle cramps, usually in the calves, either during a sporting event or workout session or directly after. What causes these painful cramps?
There are many possible causes for why the cramping occurs. Some of these include low blood sugar, salt imbalance due to sweating, nerve damage, compromised blood flow, heat or cold and even a disruption of energy along acupuncture meridians. While many of these are general causes of cramps, there is disagreement whether they are actually involved in exercise-induced cramping.  Read More

Doctors still prescribing antibiotics for the ‘wrong diseases’
13 February 2012
Doctors still don’t get it – they continue to hand out prescriptions for antibiotics for health problems that can’t be helped by the drugs, such as coughs and sinusitis.  And they are bringing closer the ‘doomsday’ scenario of the antibiotic-resistant superbug. In the UK alone, doctors are handing out around 1.6 million unnecessary prescriptions for antibiotics at a cost of £8.4 million every year, researchers have discovered. The drugs do absolutely nothing to ease diseases that are caused by a virus – and they add to the growing problem of antibiotic-resistance.
Researchers from Cardiff University have estimated the over-use of antibiotics from a survey of 68 GP practices.   When the doctors at the practices were taught the kind of diseases for which antibiotics should be prescribed, their prescriptions for the drugs fell by 5.5 per cent, resulting in an £830 saving per practice.   If this saving was extrapolated across the UK, total annual savings would amount to £8.4m.(Source: British Medical Journal, 2012; 344: d8173).

Military Pokes Holes In Acupuncture Skeptics’ Theory
‘Let’s Give It A Shot’
Army doctors have been told by the top brass to rethink their “pill for every ill” approach to treating pain. For the 47,000 troops who’ve been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, some of the new options include less tried and true methods, like massage and chiropractic treatments. The military hopes to win over skeptics, many of them in uniform.
Wasserman is the top doctor for the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Campbell, Ky. To her own surprise, she’s also now the unit’s physician trained to do acupuncture.
“I actually had a demonstration of acupuncture on me, and I’m not a spring chicken,” she says, “and it didn’t make me 16 again, but it certainly did make me feel better than I had, so I figured, hey … let’s give it a shot with our soldiers here.”
In recent years, military doctors have turned to acupuncture in special pain clinics and for troops in battle zones. Last year, the Army surgeon general began making the alternative treatments more widely available.
Steering Away From Painkillers
Remalia says his headaches have disappeared, and he’s relying less on his cabinet full of pain medication. To Col. Kevin Galloway, that’s mission accomplished. He’s in charge of carrying out recommendations from the Army’s Pain Management Task Force, which focused heavily on unconventional therapies.
“You can throw fairly cheap pharmaceuticals at the problem now and push the problem to someone else later if you’re not really working on what the genesis of the pain is,” he says.
Galloway says if soldiers get hooked on high-powered painkillers, the Department of Veterans Affairs may be dealing with the side effects for decades to come. Already, at least 40 percent of veterans entering the VA system are coping with pain.  Read More

The yelping sounds from the dog’s mouth are symptoms of something greater going on & simply treating these symptoms by trying to eliminate the dog’s ability to vocalize a health issue with drugs or surgery is equivalent to the medical approach to health. True holistic health practitioners look beyond obvious signs & symptoms to the actual origins of dis-ease & work to re-establish your natural state of ease. Harvard Declares Dairy NOT Part of Healthy Diet

The Harvard School of Public Health sent a strong message to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and nutrition experts everywhere with the recent release of its “Healthy Eating Plate” food guide.  The university was responding to the USDA’s new MyPlate guide for healthy eating, which replaced the outdated and misguided food pyramid.

Harvard’s nutrition experts did not pull punches, declaring that the university’s food guide was based on sound nutrition research and more importantly, not influenced by food industry lobbyists.  The greatest evidence of its research focus is the absence of dairy products from the “Healthy Eating Plate” based on Harvard’s assessment that “…high intake can increase the risk of prostate cancer and possibly ovarian cancer.”  The Harvard experts also referred to the high levels of saturated fat in most dairy products and suggested that collards, bok choy, fortified soy milk, and baked beans are safer choices than dairy for obtaining calcium, as are high quality supplements.

Kudos to Harvard for promoting greater consumption of vegetables and fruits, as well as healthier protein options such as fish, beans or nuts.  And kudos to Harvard for ignoring the lobbyists and showing the USDA what healthy eating is all about.

Dr. Jay’s Note:  Using a bio-response technique over the last few years, I have performed hundreds of Individualized Food Analysis for my clients. From these results, I am more than comfortable to recommend that we should all avoid dairy products as it causes an internal stress response (as does Canola Oil). Internal stress can manifest into a wide range of health issues depending on how the individual personally responds to excess stress. The dairy industry has had awesome advertising & lobbing success in the U.S. - However, avoid dairy if you want to get the most out of life.
