ScienceDaily (Mar. 6, 2012) — A new study published in the journal Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica reveals that induction of labor at term in the absence of maternal or fetal indications increases the risk of cesarean section and other postpartum complications for the woman, as well as neonatal complications.
Induction of labor is common and increasing over time in many countries. A large proportion of women are induced for “social” and other “non-recognized” reasons.
Induction of labor for non-recognized indications was associated with a 67% increased relative risk of cesarean section (compared with spontaneous labor).
It also significantly increased the chance of the infant requiring Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nursery care (an increased relative risk of 64%) or treatment (an increased relative risk of 44%) when compared with the spontaneous labor onset. Read More
Dr. Jay’s Note: Holistic living is based around living with the wisdom of nature not against her. Trying to out-smart nature typically does not end in our favor. Look for opportunities in your life to work with nature instead of trying to speed up or improve upon the wisdom that nature gives to us.
Those who attend to such matters measure the health of populations based upon how many children survive the process of being born and living the first year of their life. It’s called the infant mortality rate. With all the so-called high-tech health care we enjoy, you’d think we’d be among the healthiest nation in the world.
Think again.
In 2005, the most current year for which figures are available, suggests that technology is not necessarily the answer. In a survey of 33 countries, many of the most highly developed western nations find themselves in the company of Poland, Latvia, Hungary and the little country of Malta. Using this metric, Singapore is the healthiest nation on the planet:
Country Deaths/1000 Births Singapore 2.10 Australia 4.69 Canada 4.75 United Kingdom 5.16 New Zealand 5.85 United States 6.50
Japan, Sweden and Iceland are also among the healthiest nations. Mary Beth Powers, a health adviser for Save the Children, an international child development organization that analyzed health data from countries and agencies worldwide stated that, “We are among the wealthiest in the world, but there are still pockets of our population who are not getting the health care they need.” Read More
Moms-to-be long have been told by their doctors and baby-related books and websites that staying fit during pregnancy is good for both mother and child. When it was reported a couple of years back that exercising strengthens a fetus’ heart control, many pregnant women took heed and hit the ground running, literally. Some signed up for prenatal yoga classes; others found new ways to incorporate low-impact aerobic activities into their daily lives.
But, for those pregnant women out there who might not be feeling all that motivated, or anything but energized, new research being reported this weekend could tip the scales: It turns out that exercising during pregnancy might be the earliest intervention strategy available to you for improving your child’s heart health after birth. Dr. Jay’s Note: Not only are they eating for two, but the lifestyle of moms-to-be has a huge effect on their child’s overall health. If you are expecting, it is important that you eat right, drink plenty of water, exercise regularly, get proper rest, think positive thoughts & breathe deep into your diaphragm often - your health & the overall health of your child depends on your lifestyle choices (you might want to consider hiring a coach).
Want your child to love veggies? Start early. Very early. Research shows that what a woman eats during pregnancy not only nourishes her baby in the womb, but may shape food preferences later in life.
….Still in the womb, the growing baby gulps down several ounces of amniotic fluid daily. That fluid surrounding the baby is actually flavored by the foods and beverages the mother has eaten in the last few hours. Read More
Dr. Jay’s Note: More evidence to support healthy eating during pregnancy.
Feeding a baby on only breast milk and for up to 6 months after birth can reduce their risk of developing asthma-related symptoms in early childhood, according to new research.
The study, which is published online July 21, 2011 in the European Respiratory Journal, looked at the impact of the duration of breastfeeding and the introduction of alternative liquids or solids in addition to breast milk. Read More
Dr. Jay’s Note: Attention all moms-to-be, here’s another advantage of natural, holistic living. Strive to give your child the best start possible by breastfeeding for their first year.
Lucy Peck, 27, from Logan, Utah, will be a first-time mom. She and her husband, Aaron, are planning to have a drug-free hospital birth.
“I want a natural, drug-free birth. I want to be an active participant in my labor. I want to know when he’s coming, feel for myself the urge to push, and be aware of when my son has finally entered the world. I’m excited about labor. I’m looking forward to it, and I can’t tell if that’s because I really am excited about it or I just want something, anything, to happen at this point.” Read More
