On Valentine’s Day, people who have been unlucky in love will be said to suffer from a “broken heart.” It turns out that a broken heart is an actual medical condition. Broken heart syndrome occurs during highly stressful or emotional times, such as a painful breakup, the death of a spouse, the loss of a job or extreme anger, said Loyola University Health System cardiologist Dr. Binh An P. Phan.

Broken heart syndrome also is called stress cardiomyopathy. Symptoms are similar to those of a heart attack, including chest pain and difficulty breathing. The good news is that, over time, the symptoms go away. And unlike heart attack patients, people with broken heart syndrome do not suffer lasting damage to their hearts, Phan said.

“Most people will get better in a few weeks without medical treatment,” Phan said. During an extremely stressful event, the heart can be overwhelmed with a surge of adrenalin and other stress hormones. This can cause a narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. It’s similar to what happens during a heart attack, when a blood clot in a coronary artery restricts blood supply to heart muscle. But unlike a heart attack, broken heart syndrome is reversible, Phan said.

But it’s difficult to distinguish between broken heart syndrome and a heart attack, Phan said. Thus, if you experience symptoms such as chest pain and difficulty breathing, don’t assume you’re having broken heart syndrome - call 911. Read More

Dr. Jay’s Note: How you react on the inside to your outside world has a huge effect on the quality of your life. Learn simple stress management skills & practice them daily. My favorites all revolve around a 10 second break. Pause, be silent, breathe deep into your diaphragm & think about something that make you smile. Do this exercise for 10 seconds twice an hour & watch miracles occur in your life.

"You are the boss of your life. Mild Dehydration Causes...

Is Your Glass Half Empty? Mild Dehydration Causes Pessimism

According to a new study on dehydration and mood, the optimist may view her glass as half full because she drank that water already. While mild dehydration didn’t appear to affect cognitive function in the young women who participated in the study, it did dampen their moods and caused them to perceive tasks as much harder than when well-hydrated.

For the study, which appears in the January 2012 issue of the Journal of Nutrition, researchers induced mild dehydration among 25 subjects and measured their performance on tests of memory, concentration, and mood. When dehydrated, the women were more negative, had trouble concentrating and were “more fatigued, and this was true during mild exercise and when sitting at a computer,” explained University of Connecticut professor and lead researcher Lawrence E. Armstrong, PhD in a WebMD story.

Dr. Robert Glatter of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City told WebMD that the study should serve as a reminder to stay hydrated. “Just a small change in state of hydration was enough to affect mood, ability to concentrate, and lead to development of headaches,” he said. Dr. Glatter recommends consuming moderate quantities of water, both during and after exercise.

Dr. Jay’s Note: We should never underestimate the link between the mind & body. Be holistically good to yourself throughout the day & make sure that you drink plenty of purified water.

"We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing."

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” -...

Physical Activity Yields Feelings of Excitement,...

Physical Activity Yields Feelings of Excitement, Enthusiasm

ScienceDaily (Feb. 8, 2012) — People who are more physically active report greater levels of excitement and enthusiasm than people who are less physically active, according to Penn State researchers. People also are more likely to report feelings of excitement and enthusiasm on days when they are more physically active than usual.

“You don’t have to be the fittest person who is exercising every day to receive the feel-good benefits of exercise,” said David Conroy, professor of kinesiology. “It’s a matter of taking it one day at a time, of trying to get your activity in, and then there’s this feel-good reward afterwards.”

Conroy added that it often is hard for people to commit to an exercise program because they tend to set longterm rather than short-term goals.

“When people set New Year’s resolutions, they set them up to include the entire upcoming year, but that can be really overwhelming,” he said. “Taking it one day at a time and savoring that feel-good effect at the end of the day might be one step to break it down and get those daily rewards for activity. Doing this could help people be a little more encouraged to stay active and keep up the program they started.” Read More

Dr. Jay’s Note: Pick a physical activity that you enjoy doing & look for opportunities to do it often. You can dance, garden, hike, swim, play a sport, etc.

My favorite forms of ‘exercise’ are surfing & trail running. Even though I’m usually pretty tired after a session in the water, surfing feels like play & yet it’s a great workout. Running on trails becomes a meditation in & with nature, the physical workout is just a tremendous bonus.

Be more playful in your exercise this month & soon your habits will improve for the long term.

"Some think life is not so much a place to seek personal happiness and fulfillment but rather a place..."

“Some think life is not so much a place to seek personal happiness and fulfillment but rather...

What Do You Love?

Dr. Jay’s Note: Spend a few minutes today thinking about the things that you love (person, place or thing). Write down 10 of your loves & watch how it changes your day.

"Whatever you’re thinking about is literally like planning a future event.
We tend to overestimate other people’s happiness and forget that in every life, there is a little sunshine and a little rain.

No matter how perfect someone else’s life seems, they still have their own struggles. And they still deal with the natural human instinct to wonder what else is out there, and if there’s something else they should be doing.

We can either focus on other people’s perceived good fortune, or focus our energy on recognizing and fostering our own.

We do that by planting tiny seeds for joy, and then watering them with our attention.

What seeds will you plant today?

Dr. Jay’s Note: You can’t worry & love at the same time. Look for opportunities each hour of your waking day to place your focus onto something that makes you smile. When you spend 10 seconds & focus on the things in your life that make you feel joy, you open the doors for other good things to flow into your life.

"With the realization of one’s own potential and self-confidence in one’s ability, one..."

“With the realization of one’s own potential and self-confidence in one’s ability,...

The Inner Peace Project

What happens when...

“How to Surge-Protect Yourself from STRESS”

What happens when you plug ten appliances into one outlet and turn them all on at the same time? You blow a circuit! The same thing can happen when you surge an unprotected Nerve System with STRESS.

Picture your Nerve System as an electrical outlet with multiple stressors plugged in. Turn them all on at the same time and POW – you overload the system, fry a circuit and ruin your good state of health. Chiropractors call this a SUBLUXATION. Depending on what nerves (circuits) are blown, you could experience symptoms from minor aches and pains to more significant health problems like High Blood Pressure (Journal of Human Hypertension, 22,1: G Bakris, MD et al.)

Although it’s impossible to turn off all the stress in your life, you can guard against unexpected surges with regular Chiropractic Care. Chiropractors perform their job like a surge protector – skillfully monitoring your Nerve System for overloads and ADJUSTING circuits back to normal when necessary. When it comes to fighting stress and dis-ease, nothing beats keeping your power ON with Chiropractic! (via theweeklysticky.com)

Dr. Jay’s Note: The essence of life flows through your spinal cord & into every aspect of your being. Excess stress interferes with that flow. Adding a holistic chiropractor to your wellness lifestyle will add years to your life & life to your years.

"The outer conditions of a person’s life will always be found to reflect their inner beliefs."

“The outer conditions of a person’s life will always be found to reflect their inner...

Life Is the Result of Your Beliefs and Expectations

You have learned everything that you know to be true through your life experiences, and those experiences have been shaped and guided by other, often well-meaning, people.

But here’s the thing: When you believe something is true, you tend to look for things that support those truths and ignore what does not. Beliefs become self-fulfilling prophecies in a sense.

So if those beliefs are helpful, then YAY! But if you want to experience something different than what you are currently living, you have to prove to yourself that something different is possible.

You have to change your expectation.

It takes practice to change the way you think. You’ve had a lifetime to form the beliefs that you are currently living, so naturally it will take a bit of effort. But, it can be done in a simple, pragmatic way.

Beliefs are just thoughts that you keep thinking, which keeps them active in your mind.

In order to change them, you must become aware of them and then shift them from the old belief to a new one, reinforcing it with lots of examples that show the new belief is true.

Here’s an example of an old belief that you might not want to believe anymore: Read More

Dr. Jay’s Note: You can’t escaped what you focus on. If you don’t like how you feel & your overall level of happiness isn’t high, you must become aware of your daily thoughts in order to make change. You can begin the healing process by taking a 10 second break multiple times throughout the day. During this 10 seconds: pause, be silent, breathe deep into your diaphragm & think about something that makes you smile. This will interrupt the racing mind pattern, distract you from any worry & allow you to become more mindful of your thoughts. Consistent practice will create miracles in your life!
